Editor's Note:

As tough economic times continue to wear on America, smarter appliances and cleaner, more efficient energy has become a top priority with our Administration and citizens. Here at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) we are addressing those needs with new innovative technology.

Since the electrical blackout on the East Coast in 2003, PNNL has been developing technology that would reduce the chances of a blackout in the future (or say prevent). In addition to their work to develop a Smarter Grid and helping to prevent brown and black outs, they have developed the "Smart Chip," which creates more efficient appliances, saving consumers money and reducing energy output by utility companies.

In this issue of Pacific Northwest Technology Today, you will read articles pertaining to these issues and the ways in which PNNL is addressing our nations needs for cleaner, cheaper energy.
