Virden and colleagues help drive change in auto industry
Jud Virden
Imagine the car of the future. What will it look like? What will it be made of? What kind of mileage will it get? And what about trucks? In times of escalating fuel prices, how can they cost-effectively transport goods to market?
These questions and more were answered at the Community Science and Technology Seminar Series lecture on January 24. Dr. Jud Virden, a scientist and manager of Automotive and Transportation Technology at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, spoke on the topic "Automobiles: The Next Generation."
Virden explained that PNNL, in partnership with government and industry, is playing a key role in developing the materials and processes that will be used to create the vehicles of the future. Research areas include advanced, light-weight materials, manufacturing, fuel cells, emissions and sensors--the key building blocks for creating lighter, more fuel efficient, cleaner cars and trucks.
