June 2007

On behalf of the Laboratory Fellows Seminar, Jungbae (JB) Kim presented Nanobiocatalysis for Biofuel Cells at the EMSL Auditorium on June 5.

On June 13, Greg Curtis spoke to approximately 90 Richland Kiwanians about economic espionage. This meeting was held at the Clarion Hotel in Richland.

Don Stevens spoke at the NORM '07 conference in Boise, Idaho regarding Bioproducts June 17 - 20.

June 24 - 26, Ron Thomas spoke at a conference in Canada titled, Commercialization in Three-Part Harmony: Money, Research & Industry...and all that Jazz. He participated in a panel on cross border technology business development.

Roy Gephart discussed Hanford history and lessons learned to about 200 PNNL students and summer interns on June 25.

On June 26, Marc Cummings participated in a panel discussion on Clean Energy as part of the Prosperity Partnership Central Washington Tour.

On June 28, Paul Burrows discussed the reality, risks and rewards of nanotechnology to about 40 members of the Pasco Kiwanis.

May 2007

On May 2, Len Peters spoke to the Mill Creek Rotary regarding Science Literacy in Mill Creek, Washington.

Elizabeth Malone spoke on National Public Radio regarding the Joint Global Change Research Institute on May 4th.

On May 9, Gary Spanner spoke at the WEDA spring conference in Spokane regarding Clean Technology.

Glenn Fink, Cyber Security Response, spoke at Lockheed Martin's Information Technology Day regarding Nontraditional Approaches to Cyber Security Visualization and Complexity-Engineering on May 9 at the Three Rivers Convention Center.

Andrea Copping addressed the Technology Alliance in Seattle on May 11 as part of the organization Science and Technology Discovery Series. She spoke about Climate Change and the impacts on the Pacific Northwest.

On May 15, Mike Schwenk, Director of Commercial Partnerships, discussed the Community Roundtable at the Richland Rotary. The meeting was held at the Red Lion Richland.

Steve Stein, Global Security Technology and Policy, presented Radiation: Terrorism and Public Preparedness at a WSU Seminar on May 17.

On May 24, Jeff Estes spoke about Washington LASER to a group from the NSRC in North Carolina.

April 2007

Jeff Estes, PNNL Manager Office of Science and Engineering Education, spoke at the National Science Research Center's 2007 National Symposium for Scientists & Engineers regarding the "Effective Role of Scientists & Engineers in Statewide Initiatives."

Rob Pratt, ETD, discussed transitioning to electric cars at the Pasco Kennewick Rotary April 11.

On behalf of the Community Science and Technology Seminar Series, Ann Miracle, ETD, presented "If Mother Nature Could Talk" to over 50 attendees April 17 at the CBC Theatre.

Diana Bigelow, ETD, traveled to Walla Walla College to present at their Biology Colloquium Series on April 17.

On April 21, Roy Gephart, EMSL, presented "Observing the Springtime Universe" at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory to about 80 people.

During the Earth Month Alternative Energy Fair April 28 at CBC, Chuck Long, FSD, spoke on solar radiation and global warming, while Michael Kintner-Meyer, ESTD, discussed electronic vehicles.

March 2007

Bruce Westerberg, Battelle, talked about traveling internationally to Mrs. Nelson's sixth grade class at Chief Jo Middle School on March 6.

Ken Swanson, EMSL, discussed the Rattlesnake Mountain Observatory and Science Education Opportunities to about 35 members of the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Men's Club on March 13, and to a church group in Yakima on March 27.

Global Nuclear Energy Partnership was presented by Mike Lawrence, ESTD, on March 16 during a TRIDEC breakfast meeting.

Rob Pratt, ESTD, wowed audiences with his Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle presentation March 21 during Energy Northwest's Executive Board dinner meeting.

On March 22, George Last, ETD, discussed Ice Age Floods to about 75 members of the Pasco Kiwanis.

George Muntean, ESTD, presented Will the car of the future run on clean coal? to about 35-40 members of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Mechanical Engineering Society. The organizer remarked that George's talk was excellent and that they haven't had a technical one as interesting or well delivered in several years.

Chuck Long, FSD, discussed solar radiation and global warming March 31 at the Mid-Columbia Earth Month Kick-Off Celebration.

Greg Curtis, NSD, is teaching an Introduction to Economic Espionage Course at River's Edge High School and Richland High School this month.

February 2007

R. Eric Robinson, CISD, spoke about computer hacking on February 1 to about 20 members of the National Association of Purchasing Managers, Columbia Basin Chapter.

Mike Davis, ESTD, spoke at a National Energy Technology Conference in Orlando, FL on February 8th. He spoke to the group about the Future of Energy Technology.

On behalf of the Laboratory Director's Seminar Series, Steve Unwin, ETD, presented Prediction and the Management of Doubt: Uncertainty Analytics on February 21 to about 70 staff members.

Victor Morris, FSD, discussed climate change to about 100 retired teachers at a Retired Teachers Association luncheon February 26.

On February 27, Carol Kessler, NSD, presented a talk on North Korea to 70-75 members of the Richland Rotary Club.

Joe Oliveira, NSD, presented System of Systems on February 28 to about 65 staff members during a Laboratory Director's Seminar Series.

R. Eric Robinson presented Hacker Attacks - Are You Covering Your Tracks to an audience of almost 80 people on February 27 at the CBC Theater. This was for PNNL and Columbia Basin College's Community Science and Technology Seminar Series.

January 2007

Steve Reidel from the ETD presented The Geologic Evolution of the Columbia River System January 9 in the Battelle Auditorium for the Ice Age Floods Institute Professional Society.

Len Peters, Battelle, spoke about the importance of science education to about 85 members of the Rotary Club of Columbia Center on January 18.

December 2006

Rich Chapas, CPD, spoke at the '06 Nano S&T Conference in Arlington, VA on "Commercializing Nano" on December 5.

Len Peters spoke about Science Literacy to the University of Washington's Leaders to Legends breakfast in Seattle on December 6.

Ed Baker, ETD, spoke about bioproducts at the Powering the NW into the 21st Century Conference in Portland, OR on December 13.

Corey Duberstein, ETD, gave a presentation on owls to Mrs. Nelson's third grade class at Jason Lee Elementary School December 14.

On behalf of the Laboratory Director's Seminar Series on Predictive Systems Science, Paul Burrows, ESTD, presented Nanosystems in the Battelle Auditorium December 14.

November 2006

On behalf of PNNL and Columbia Basin College's Community Science and Technology Seminar Series, Jon Young from the ETD presented Advancing Patient Safety on November 9 to a crowd of 55-60 people.

The ESTD's Rob Pratt participated in a panel discussion on energy grid reliability for a conference presented by Boise State University and Portland University in Portland, Oregon on November 9.

Dr. Rita Colwell, Chairman, Canon US Life Sciences, Inc, visited PNNL to meet with staff and present Oceans, Climate and Health: The Cholera Paradigm. This Director's Lecture on Predictive Systems Science occurred November 13 to an almost full auditorium.

H. Steven Wiley, EMSL, presented System Science in the Battelle Auditorium on November 15 for the internal Director's Lecture series.

Opportunities for Science Education and Outreach using Rattlesnake Mountain Observatory was presented by Ken Swanson, EMSL, to the Senior's Potluck group at Kennewick First United Methodist Church. This luncheon talk occurred November 20 to a group of 60-70 people.

Len Peters spoke at the Neurological Resource Center 25th Anniversary Celebration November 27 at Dr. Zhang's office in Richland. About 50 people listened as Len remarked on how exciting it has been to see the progress for taking a very modest investment by Battelle and turning it into a great resource. Len, Karen Blasdel, Pam Novak, Mike Lawrence and Becky Ford attended from PNNL.

On November 29, Jerry Johnson from theCISD spoke on the Northwest TeraLink at the Pasco-Kennewick Rotary. This luncheon meeting was held at Leo's Catering/Blue Moon Restaurant in Kennewick to a crowd of about 60 people.

PNNL Laboratory Director, Len Peters, spoke to about 100 people on November 30 at a Rotary meeting in Lynnwood, Washington. Dr. Peters spoke about the importance of science literacy for our nation.

October 2006

Daryl Anderson, CISD, participated in a webcast for Scientific Computing magazine in New York on October 19.

On October 25, Mike Lawrence spoke at the Herbert M. Parker Foundation Public Lecture forum about Hanford and the Birth of DOE Clean-up. This was held at WSU-Tri Cities.

Jeff Estes, PNNL Education Programs Director, spoke about Washington LASER at a NSRC meeting in Washington D.C. at the Keck Center on October 30.

Charlette Geffen, FSD, presented Global Climate Change at the Local Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers October 30. This dinner meeting occurred at The Smokehouse BBQ in Richland.

Alan Rohay, ETD, discussed Mount St. Helens October 12 to over 70 people on behalf of the Community Science and Technology Seminar Series. This series is sponsored by PNNL and Columbia Basin College.

September 2006

Don Stevens, ESTD, discussed biofuels at the Washington Good Roads Association dinner meeting September 20.

Paul Burrows, ESTD, participated in a panel discussion on Nano at the Small Times Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada September 21st.

Alan Waltar, ESTD, spoke to a group at Gonzaga University in Spokane on September 22nd.

Doug Ray, FSD, spoke to a group about Nano at the Nano TX '06 Conference in Dallas, Texas on September 24-28.

Len Peters spoke at the Kennewick Kiwanis September 26. About 60 members were in attendance for his PNNL Overview presentation.

On September 30, Roy Gephart, EMSL, presented the history of Hanford to 15 people at the American Safari Cruises.

August 2006

Paul Burrows, ESTD, spoke to the Yakima Rotary on August 10. Nearly 100 people were in attendance to hear his presentation on Nano Technology.

On August 14, Don Stevens, ESTD, spoke about Biofuels at the Ben Franklin Transit Citizens' Advisory Committee.

Two external Director's Lectures Series occurred at PNNL in August. Dr. George Whitesides from Harvard University presented Dynamic Self-Assembly, Complexity, and Emergence on August 17 to a Battelle Auditorium standing room only crowd. On August 18, Dr. Ilhan Aksay from Princeton University presented Biologically Inspired Materials.

July 2006

Robert Brigantic, NSD, spoke about transportation issues in relation to an Avian flu epidemic at the July 10 Ben Franklin Transit's Citizens Advisory Committee meeting. There were about eleven members present.

On July 17, Beverly Hayes, CER, updated the Richland Riverside Rotary Club members on the Hanford Technical Library at the Consolidated Information Center. About thirteen club members were present at the Anthony's Restaurant lunch meeting.

Julie Tarara, Ph.D., Research Horticulturist, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, spoke to PNNL staff on July 25 at the EMSL Auditorium. Her topic was Monitoring Trellis Tension for Better Vineyard Management.

June 2006

On behalf of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Director's Lecture Series, Dr. Mark Ratner from Northwestern University spoke on Nanoscale Transport in Molecules - Mechanistic Issues June 5 in the PNNL Auditorium.

Authors Steve Reidel and Bruce Bjornstad attended a book signing event held at the CREHST museum on June 28 to promote their recently issued books.

Dr. Steve Reidel, ETD, spoke to the Wenatchee Valley Erratics Council regarding the Ice Age Floods on June 12th. Approximately 70 + were in attendance in Wenatchee to hear Dr. Reidel speak and to learn more about his book.
